Women’s Designer Shoe Fetish?Stepping Up – Why Woman Love ShoesThanks to Liz Rudenko for her Point of View Article There is one factor that amazes most men whenever they walk into the bedroom of a woman. It’s not that they can actually see the floor, nor is it the fluffy pillows that cover the girly bed sheets; they are amazed by their obsessive collection of shoes. “How many pairs of shoes can one person possibly have?” is a question that nearly every woman has been asked at least at one point in her life. Often at this point, we as women laugh at their ignorance and simply say, “you’re a guy, you wouldn’t understand.” But the idea of a woman’s relationship with shoes does go further than just the need to spend money; it truly is a relationship that needs to be understood. In life a woman feels many challenges and disappointments, competing for the right job, waiting for the right man, aspiring to fit into a world that has for a long time been predominantly male dominated. She often feels restless, afraid and lost. In children’s books, characters that felt this way became secret super heroes; spider man was a young boy who couldn’t fit into life until he put on his mask. Similarly a woman puts on a pair of high-heels, each pair tailored to give her a step up in the situation she is in. There is nothing more feared, listened to or powerful then the clicking sounds of a high-heel – every fashion iconic moment remembered in a movie began with that first click of a heel. In 2006, fashion lovers around the world watched with bated breath as Meryl Streep took her first steps in ‘The Devil Wears Prada’ owning every minute of the movie from that point. In a power driven environment such as the office the click of a heel represents power, strength and ownership. It is a woman’s way of saying “I have arrived and I am ready for whatever you will throw at me.”
As a companion, shoes are also a form of comfort on days we may feel a little small, irrelevant or insignificant, be it because we’re alone or just because the day is a little bit weary. It is days like these we look over at our loyally awaiting shoe stand and put on the brightest, highest most extravagant pair of heels, because they will never discriminate what we look like, what size we are or what our status is – they will simply be there to brighten our day. Sure they won’t solve our problems, but often they will make us see things from a higher angle and perhaps give us a little boost. In life we tend to walk through different paths, roads that lead us to where we want to be and roads that take us back to re-think our choices. Yet no matter what road we walk through, we as women walk in heel-clicking stride, knowing our shoes will keep us held high.
