Fashion is Escapism!

I have been in a routine of late where movies are dominating my spare time. I’ve watched a wide variety of genres all of which are complete opposites to my daily routine of work rest and play. I guess I watch movies as a form of ‘escapism’. Now I’m not saying that I’m not happy with the way my life is heading, I just enjoy the odd movie or two as light hearted distraction from routine – like most people. It got me thinking… movies, books, music, sports, arts and crafts etc etc etc are all forms of escapism. It got me thinking further, until I finally asked myself the question – What is it about shopping (more particularly for females) that people love so much. Or more specifically – what is it about new fashion that people love so very much? My answer – escapism?? The odd thing that separates fashion from sports, movies, music, arts or books is what I call the ‘financial factor’. I find it ironic that fashion, be it cool, rare, unique or simply extravagant…..is expensive, if not Very expensive. I’d say its almost a given that to be labeled (excuse the pun) a successful, global fashion label, ones range is at least a little pricey. Yet books, movies, sports, and arts are all relatively free or can be done with minimal expense… The odd thing that separates fashion from other escapism activities is what I call the ‘torture barrier’. Today, both men and women will torture their pockets and diets to squeeze into those skinny leg jeans (and yes I mean men and women equally). Its amazing the human resilience to avoiding the core necessities of life such as food, for the love of fashion. So what is it about fashion that has us humans (with our developed brains and lateral thinking) going against some basic principles such as eating right, and being ‘smart’ with our money? I think I figured a part of this out… Fashion is a statement that can express all emotions without a voice. Fashion can turn heads, cause whispers, cause arousal, and cause utter anger without a word. But I think the most amazing thing about fashion is its ability to display confidence to strangers. Humans are based on our five senses but I think sight is the most weighted by all. I guess I believe that fashion can give confidence and shape opinions to anyone… And of course, it’s the journey of escapism first… So girls and boys, the next time ur feeling sorry for urself and u go shopping to cheer urself up, its probably a lack of confidence or an urge to impress running through your head. I guess it’s the panadol for self-assurance and getting noticed….?
