Boutique Designer Swimwear by Indhra Chagoury and Jeremy Somers
Australian Fashion Review was lucky enough to catch up with Oscar & Elvis / We are Handsome swimwear labels founder Indhra Chagoury for a few words about how she entered the world of designer womens swimwear.
Q1) Please introduce yourself Indhra and tell us about your background.
With a Queensland coastal upbringing and a creative family, design is in my blood. I have no formal fashion training but studied Fashion Business as FBI College in Sydney.
Q2) How did the Oscar & Elvis and We Are Handsome labels begin?
Oscar & Elvis began 6 years ago with the joint conception between 3 close friends. Our passion for creativity and a love of all things fashion led us to find a niche in the market for affordable fashion swimwear with an emphasis on design, rich colours and luxe fabric. Oscar & Elvis collaborated with Sportsgirl in 2008 to create an exclusive range which was sold through 14 stores.
This collaboration opened our eyes to another market which allowed us to use the reputation behind the brand to experiment with other ideas without changing the brand’s image or conception in the market place. From this, We Are Handsome was born.
This is a new collaboration with People Like Us. Continuing it’s focus on design with an emphasis on fun, flirty images that can change as often as we choose.
Q2) You obviously have a focus on swimwear – how did you decide to specialise in this niche?
Australia leads the world in swimwear design. Our lifestyle and seasons allow for it to be summer all year round in some parts of the country. With the majority of Australia being coastal, it’s a regular occurrence to travel from the beach to a bar. We also wanted to do something different, clichéd but true. We wanted something that could make you feel special.
We wanted to make swimsuits that make people that make you say WOW!
Q3) What do you hope to accomplish with your fashion labels? What is the dream!?
To have fun and express ourselves in the fashion marketplace. There’s nothing better than being at the beach, a gig, or a festival and seeing someone in one of our suits.
Q4) Who are your favourite fashion designers and what about them inspires you? What else inspires you?
Mmm – Missoni always has the most exquisite colour palate and collections from Lanvin always draw some kind of raw emotion from me. I really get the WOW factor.
But there are many other things I get inspiration from: fresh flowers, a day at the beach, street graffiti and travel.
Q5) If you could pick someone famous that best represents your labels style, who would it be? Alternatively, what famous person/s would you want wearing your label?
Florence from Florence and the Machine. Just magical.
