Q1) Who are the name/s behind the fashion label and what is/are your backgrounds (i.e. training, education ancestry)?

Orri Henrisson is currently run by Henry Ng. I am actually from a Arts / Multimedia background and have never studied fashion.  I am fortunate to work with a pattern-maker who is also a friend and I have learnt immensely from her. Everything else has been self-taught and trial and error.

Q2) When and how did it all begin?

It started in early 2008 when I became disinterested and bored with Melbourne’s black aesthetic and when I could not find clothes that I want to wear. I have a vibrant, quirky, dapper and sometimes even outrageous taste and I found that the local market was not catering to that. I found many labels were producing collections that were about bravado and trendy chic rather than investment pieces or clothes that are fun to wear so I decided that Orri Henrisson had to happen.

Q3) What do you hope to accomplish with your fashion label? What is the dream!?

Since I come from a Multimedia background I somehow would like to merge that aspect with the label, like Acne Studios, Surface to Air and Henrik Vibskov. I like the idea of collaborations with people who work with different mediums and would love to incorporate them into Orri Henrisson’s collections. That could be working with different artists or friends in terms of photography, prints, jewellery, music, garment designs etc.

On a very ambitious scale, I hope to break into the UK and Japanese market because I think that is where my market is. I also like the idea of collaborations and hope to design a capsule collection for Topman.

Q4) Who are your favourite fashion designers and what about them inspires you? What else inspires you?

At the moment, I really like how Patrik Ervell and Christopher Shannon have re-interpreted technical and sportswear.

Patrik Ervell has a very technical approach, designs for functionality and uses fabrics that most menswear designers would not use. All his collections, however, have been very effortless and expensive looking and they are actually clothes which I think men would want to wear.

Christopher Shannon also thinks about what men would wear and takes it to the next level by incorporating vibrant colours, mixing fabrics and adding details. It is experimental but again, effortless and his collections look expensive and wearable.

Other designers and labels that I like are Eric LeBon, Fifth Avenue Shoe Repair and Zoologie (a great Melbourne label that came out the same time as Orri Henrisson and who does not do only black).

Music and photography are also big inspirations. Sometimes, a design could come about because of how I had envisioned it to look like in the mise-en-scene of a photograph. Another big unrelated inspiration at the moment: Lady Gaga.

Q5) If you could pick someone famous that best represents your labels style, who would it be? Alternatively, what famous person/s would you want wearing your label?

Beck. He needs to be my walking advertisement. And I would like Owen Pallett of Final Fantasy and the guys from Hot Chip to wear my clothes.

Q6) Complete the following sentence: Our fashion label is unique because?

It is not about black, black and black and not about looking like a hipster.
