Mr. Carter isn’t a collection. It’s a wardrobe.
Mr Carter is an Australian menswear fashion label founded by Zach Carter in 2011. Zach had previous international design experiences with the likes of Anglomania and Vivienne Westwood, before launching his eponymous brand. Mr Carter was born out of an over-saturation in the menswear market of a classic ‘heritage’ aesthetic, instead opting for a far more wearable aesthetic. Specialising in garments for the 20-something male, the brand’s signature style is an upscale version of gritty Parisian street style, with an emphasis on strong tailoring and quality fabrications.
The Sydney-based brand continues with this signature aesthetic with the Autumn/Winter 2012 collection, entitled ‘Grand Tour’. The collection is inspired by the 18th century term ‘Grand Tour’, which refers to privileged young Englishman, who spent those valuable months between study and career, with an educational tour of continental Europe. The Collection represents their adventures, except that these travelers have an objective of getting into trouble – they can be found skate boarding, surfing, playing music and chatting up girls
The aesthetic of the Autumn/Winter 2012 offering is a mixture of the refined style of Paris, the elegance of Milan and the cool street style of London and New York, resulting in a collection full of juxtaposition – high against low, formal against casual, in an upscale version of the gritty, vintage street style of the 1950’s. The collection features graphic tees, casual yet stylish pin-cords teamed with battered sweaters, chunky cable knits, sharply tailored blazers and military-style jackets, for the charming yet cheeky guy. Stand out pieces of the collection include a fairisle style knit, a tailored short jacket with contrasting leather arms, a pair of sweat pants with contrasting knee patches, and a dark caramel coloured pin-cord suit.
