Mens Clothing & Fashion – Skinny or Baggy Jeans??

We thought it would be worthwhile raising the topic of mens jeans the most fashionable representation amongst Australian men in the current day and age. As far bag as fashion was classified as fashion, men have wore jeans – either for its practical sense as a durable cotton fabric that was hardwearing and lasting, or for its modern image as a forever fashionable wardrobe staple.

The history of denim and jeans seems pretty vague. The fabric of denim apparently has its origins in France, where an abbreviation of the name of the origins of the material – “tissue de Nimes”. De Nimes apparently got abbreviated to denim (Nimes is a southern France town). Jeans however, apparently were founded in good old USA in 1853 by our old friend Mr Levi Strauss, a Bavarian immigrant who lives in the history books as creating one of the world’s most recognised brands.

Enough about the history, lets step forward to the modern image of sensitive new age guys and their fast evolving reputation as fashion conscious individuals. There seems to be divide amongst men – some are more than willing to wear skinny jeans, while others squirm at the sight of a male counter-part trying to pull off the ‘feminine look’.

We pose the question, are men’s skinny jeans a bit on the ‘gay’ side? Can men pull off the look? Should men pull of the look?

There is no doubt a number of Australian designer labels are cashing in on the hype of skinny jeans for guys. Ksubi and Flux were amongst the first to sell mens skinny jeans in an array of cuts and colours. Chronicles of Never have recently added mens skinny jeans to their repertoire, as have other Australian mens fashion labels such as Material Boy, Stevie and Mjolk.

And how about the flipside – mens baggy jeans? Are they still considered the ‘homeboy/homie’ image that only gangsters or skaties wear around the block? Should men have their arse crack out in the open for all to see, or should men be more willing to constrict their package in a skinny jeans?

Let us know your thoughts budding fashionistas!

  1. adam says:

definately a no go to mens skinny leg jeans. girls wear skinny leg jeans because they have a figure to show off. guys have no reason to have figure hugging jeans.

  2. Best Jeans for Men says:

Yep, I’m with Adam. No on skinny leg jeans for most men.

  3. skinny jeans man says:

no way adam, mens skinny jeans have been around a long time – the old school rock punkers made them cool in the 70′s and 80′s, it was only a matter of time before guys started to wear skinny leg jeans again.

  4. ms q says:

baggy mens jeans look cheap and nasty – skinny leg jeans look good on pple who are skinny, but wrong on pple who aren’t.

  5. Nicky C says:

Just go on and watch “August” by Josh Hartnett, and you can see that skinny jeans look good on guys as well. However, having said so, it looks good only on skinny people.

  6. SB says:

If you actually have some leg muscles, skinny jeans are simply not an option.

  7. Frank says:

Skinny jeans are for girls. They do not look right on guys unless they are queer.
Baggy jeans are the other extreme and no they are not the way to go either.
Fortunately there is a happy medium. There is a cut out there called ‘straight leg’ if I am not correct. This cut is neither baggy nor skinny but just nice.

  8. Jassssse says:

    Really depends on the guy,

  9. Anon says:

I agree with Jassssse, skinny leg jeans is a growing fashion trend whether you boring old-fashion grandma’s like it or not. If males have skinny legs I say go for it! It looks trendy and its a nice difference from the boring ‘straight leg’ almost every male wears. Definatly not for overweight or really muscley guys tho. Ummm and baggy jeans are for cheap bogans and try hard gangters who you see walking the streets in gangs with goon in their hand.

  10. skinny wakeup call needed says:

there is a fine line between dam right gay and meterosexual these days. the guys who wear skinny leg jeans with those black leather pointy shoes need a wake up. similarly, jeans of another colour other than black or blue need a punch in the skull – those red jeans in the post are wrong X big cross no! gangster baggy jeans with those stupid pictures and writing are completely opposite in look, but exactly the same in nature – sh*t looking and another punch to the head wouldnt got a stray.

  11. Milk is for babies says:

Skinny jeans are only for the blokes with chicken legs. It just ain’t right! If you have these legs eat some food and stop starving yourself.

    Yeah buddy!

  12. Dejavu says:

Weren’t our grandparents wearing this style? How hip. How cool.

  13. Justin says:

Skinny jeans look fine on people who have a decent body. There are obviously different ‘looks’ out there. And how you dress reflects on your personality. I think skinny jeans are for people who are comfortable in their skin and would rather stand out a bit more than the straight-leg community. Those guys are the ‘under-the-radar’ kinda guys, who just kinda glide by and don’t draw much attention to themselves. And I’d say baggy jeans are for people who are too insecure to show their figure and who wanna hide behind some thug/gangster facade and seem more threatening. But above all else, the jeans you wear are your choice and should compliment your body type. If you’re 200 pounds, you shouldn’t be wearing size 6 women’s jeans. Simple as that. And on top of that, wear jeans that are the right length. It annoys me to see peoples underwear completely exposed way more than seeing jeans on the wrong body type. It’s not that hard to pull your pants up.

  14. Justin says:

As an added bonus… there is no tie between the tightness of your jeans and your sexuality. I know way more gay people who wear ‘relaxed’ or ‘straight-leg’ (hah.. ironic?) jeans that gays who wear skinny jeans. I do see how it can be a bit feminine or metrosexual… but overall it depends on what you’re comfortable in. I used to wear loose clothing back in Junior Highschool and some of highschool around the time I used to skate. I always thought skinny jeans would restrict movement so I never gave em a chance… when I finally did, I felt way more comfortable in them than I did in loose jeans. At the same time, I don’t wear skin tight jeans… but I do wear them to fit comfortably and compliment my body type. Same goes for shirts and stuff.

  15. Justin says:

…..oh and the colors are a bit ridiculous. I’m comfortable seeing colors like white to black (and the greys in between), blue and earthy tones like brown, maybe burgundy, khaki.. stuff like that. Jeans shouldn’t be made in bright colors. It’s a little extreme.

  16. Bea says:

So… I am now dating an Australian but I am American/French…dual citizen but lived in the US pretty much all of my life. ANYWAY: I always thought it was the weirdest thing that he would wear skinny jeans because in the US that just does NOT Happen unless your one of those emo-type kids that hates their lives and think everything sucks. When we finally started talking about it, he told me that the MAJORITY of guys AND girls wear skinny jeans in Australia! And he noticed that I wear “baggy” jeans LOL! (just flared not baggy!!!) Anyway its funny how much of a culture difference there is between two countries that speak the same language. Lucky for him I actually love him for him and dont mind the skinnys anymore :-p It still blows my mind though, never would have thought I’d date a guy that wears skinny jeans …hah!

  17. Kelvin @ Cheap Halloween Costumes says:

Yeah that’s an interesting question and I think it really depends on the guy. If he’s kinda tall and lanky, skinny…then he’d most likely be able to pull off the skinny…if not I’d rather see him in a baggier pair. Moreover for I don’t like baggy type cos it feels like it also went off from me. So I like to wear skinny type but not that tight one.

  18. an old folkie says:

I’ve worn jeans pretty much most of my life. Always liked them fitting well. Never had baggies so I don’t know what it’s like. Anyway, one day I came home and girlfriend was chatting to me about my day at work. She hands me my jeans as I change out of my work clothes. She was smiling but I didn’t know why. I couldn’t work it out, but it turned out she’d had my jeans on the sewing machine and grabbed about and inch or so of material down the length of both legs, stitched in a new seam all the way down and cut out the old seam. I didn’t actually notice at first until I looked in the mirror. They felt like jeans do when they’re straight from the clothes line after a wash. I kept wearing them. I liked it. This would have been around 1970. Years later when I bought myself a motorcycle I found it difficult stretching to get both feet on the ground when stopped. The jeans wouldn’t give. Okay when I was riding with my feet on the pegs, but trying for two feet on the ground was near impossible. I bought a pair of stretch jeans. And what a difference. They bend with you, don’t get in the way, and I could get both feet on the ground making riding the bike a new experience. I always bought stretch jeans from then. I don’t go for anything expensive; though I did spend $80 once. Mostly I go for Target or Kmart stretch jeans, and pay about half that price. My rules for buying are try on different sizes getting smaller until either you can’t fit into them, or you can but they are uncomfortable. I buy the next size up. I then note that size, go back out and grab about four or so pairs of exactly the same size and try them all on, and get the pair that I like best. So they are not skinny jeans as such, but maybe the next best thing to them. They end up being the most comfortable for me. This is all very pragmatic. And with the stretch material taking up all the slack on my thighs they look tight. An inevitable consequence with stretch and the sizes I go for is that they fit my backside like they were tailored. My wife encourages me to keep doing it. She’s happy and I feel good. Anyway, if you’ve got it flaunt it, which goes for jeans on guys.

  19. Ange says:

Skinny Jeans – definitely compliments the lower half and if you can get away with them, why not – go for it! They look good with with anything you put with them. More and more guys these days are confident enough to wear these types of fits whether its skinny or slim and thats because of the way they look on!
In saying this, guys in girls jeans is a NO! Mens skinny jeans are made for a reason.

On the other hand, baggier jeans can look good depending on the fit. Big, baggy, no shape jeans definitely a no but a Low crutch, tapered leg but loose fit is a great jean and will slowly come in.
    Well thats just my thoughts…

  20. Nathan says:

No Skinny Jeans for Men, No colour for men, don’t step out of line … you MUST blend bla bla bla

everyone’s different and different people can pull of different looks which is what I admire.

  21. Carter says:

personally i think both skinny and baggy jeans just prove that someone couldnt accept the fact that there is a right size and fit for everyone that is not baggy and not tight. just another example of someone trying to be unique and then having their style become mainstream.

i dont like seeing other guy’s boxers, nor do i like being able to see their thigh muscles, or lack there of.

  22. Veronica says:

I love men in Skinny Jeans. These pictures don’t really show good example of men in skinny jeans. They’ve been popular for a long time in Japan, when I lived there, and most likely still now. They’re quite sexy :) My husband wishes he could wear them, but he thinks he’s too fat XD I think they look good on him. Guys have as much too show as the girls ;)

Wear those skinny jeans guys! Your cool points will go up with the ladies :D

  23. NT says:

    Aye! Reppin Sea-town, Wa,USA

Well, Skinny or baggy, just live your life.
    Don’t judge no one.
    I prefer slim fit/fitted
But do whatever the hell you want
    Aight.

  24. Mark Martinez says:

I’m with Adam, “girls wear skinny leg jeans because they have a figure to show off.”
Dude, I gott’a feel comfy in my jeans, I like ‘em loose. So is this pushing more feminine guys to come out and declare it? That’s what I’m seeing – I’m not saying everyone who wears skinny is feminine, but it does give a raise to be open about it.
    Mark Martinez,

  25. Anon says:

Skinny jeans look repulsive on men regardless of the men’s size or shape. I think it should be a criminal offence for men to wear them as it puts lots of sane people’s eyes at risk with them having to see them!

  26. harry says:

i used to wear the hugest beggyest jeans ever but one day i tried sum slim fit not like super tight ones just skinny ones and i really liked them so now near enough all ym eans are slim but not super tight, but mind you im 6ft and skinny so i can pull it off. big boned people dont look good in them neither do chubby people [no offence intended]. i think people should just wear what they think is comfortable.

  27. Kyle Schiavone says:

You guys are a big bunch of W*NKERS. skinny jeans are smart as anything, baggy jeans are for freeks who think they’re frickin gangsters.. all those who say skinnies are for ‘queers’ are sheer COWARDS. And yeah, if you baggy guys like any Oasis, The Beatles, The View or any great bands, you better stop now ‘cos they must be g*y. idiots

  28. J says:

Anon.. you must be either homophobic, fat or both.

Skinny jeans are sexy on guys. Jealous much?

Just look at the runways in New York and Paris. Skinny men rule and get paid the $$$. The times have changed.

    Skinny is king.

  29. Enigma says:

I really don’t see what the problem is, wear what ever you like as long as you’re comfortable with it and to hell with anyone who doesn’t like it.

There’s a lot of people bagging skinny jeans on guys and yet I’ve seen some right shocking outfits on both genders from all manner of clothing but the fact is, if people are comfortable in what they are wearing or how they look then good on them.

  30. gordo says:

Maybe cos I am English and also over 40, but when I was a kid in the 70′s we used to wear flares. Then in the early 80′s you would get hassle if you did’nt wear skin tight jeans. Then in the acid houes times in the late 80′s it was all baggy. Now its skinny again.Wont be too long before its all flares again.Don’t see the problem, I wear both.

  31. hjkl says:

only the top skinny jean picture is hot. i am a straight guy who wears skinny jeans. i have many colors and everyone cant help but look at my sexy butt. other hot guys wear them in my school too and we all touch eachothers butts even though we are straight and the skinny jeans ARE SOOOOO SEXY

  32. Ash says:

You really NEED REALLY SKINNY legs to pull off wearing skinnies. people who have muscle bulk in their legs, CANNOT do it, and if they manage, it looks cr*p. Im not saying I hate either, but I do like in between or phat pants (the OPPOSITE of skinnies)

  33. Ash says:

oh, and everyone, stop whining; everyone has their own opinion, skinnies aren’t the most perfect things in the world and they aren’t the worst, so get a life!

  34. I personally perfer Baggy Jeans.
I have to agree with Ash.
Who really cares what you wear!
Skinnies suit some people and baggies others.
So different horses for different courses
