How much power is there is your power suit?

A submitted Point of View article by fashion lover/student -  Liz Ridenko

Power – a word that dominates. Does Power guarantees moving up the corporate ladder?  Does Power guarantee winning that argument or impressing the one you’ve had your eye on?

Some people believe the power we strive for is simply a personality trait, or something we grow into with age or experience. Yet if we take a closer look, the world of fashion has a much greater impact on power for women and men alike – more than we think.

It is well known that women have certain elements in fashion to make themselves feel more powerful. However, if taking men’s fashion into focus, power as a concept would be its main drive.

The man of power is the head hunter making the important deal –  the bachelor pulling up in his sports car –and he wears the outfit to match. A suit is a representation.  Be it made of wool or silk, tuxedo or single button, the male suit is like making a verbal statement without saying a single word.

There are many men all around the world that believe that they are above this fashion finding – that any suit will do as long as their mind and manner is at work. I have to disagree with ones inability to understand that fashion is more than just about fabric put together –  even for men.

If taking a ‘serious’ approach, it could be said that putting together a man’s outfit or tailoring his suit is the equivalent of writing his resume, both professional and personal. Does he want to be taken seriously? Or does he believe that the tie he wore to his graduation still works? Does he want to impress the girl? Or is more into wearing tracksuits and relying on her understanding then men are above fashion.

The truth is that many men believed fashion did not affect them in the least. However, over time designers like Tom Ford have reinvented male fashion by giving personality to garments such as the male suit.  Fashion and power go hand it hand. So the next time the gentlemen of Australia buy a suit, ask yourselves, if this suit was my resume, what would I want it to say?
