Australian fashion designers Luke Hosking and Paul del Giglio give us their sultry ‘Sirens’
A relative newcomer to the Australian fashion industry, LP33.3 is the brainchild of design duo Luke Hosking and Paul del Giglio. With an impressive design pedigree that includes working for the likes of Zimmermann, David Lawrence and Alice McCall, it is no surprise that their womenswear label is making it’s mark in the Australian fashion industry. The brand name is an acronym of the designer’s initials (LP), with the ‘33.3’ representing the infinite loop, a good choice considering all their pieces are made to last.
Never ones to blindly follow the fashion pack, Paul and Luke steer clear of fad, trends and mass production overseas, instead producing timeless collections with a top quality hand-crafted approach. With a chic simplicity at the heart of each seasonal offering, the duo never over complicate their garments with over-the-top frills and detailing, instead allowing the fine natural fabrics speak for themselves.
This design philosophy is evident once again in the brand’s uber stylish Spring/Summer 2012-2013 collection, entitled ‘Sirens’. As the title suggests, the seasonal line is inspired by the Greek mythological Sirens, as depicted in the illustrations of John Flaxman in the Odyssey. Sirens were powerful, dangerous creatures, portrayed as seductresses who lured sailors to their deaths on the rocky coast of their island with their enchanting siren song. Paul and Luke were inspired by the beauty and strength of the Sirens, and the way Flaxman’s depictions capture the draping in suspension as if it were floating underwater.
The collection features strong structured tailoring, juxtaposed against soft layers and floaty drapery, mirroring the feel of Flaxman’s drawings. The coastal colour palette of soft feminine blues, intense saffron and shell tones, mixed in with hues off deep ink and charcoal suggests to the changing tides of the seas.
