Former model, turned fashion designer Lisa Maree, launched her namesake resort-wear label in 2006, soon gaining a reputation for designing some of the most innovative, sexy and daring swimwear that Australia has to offer. Taking influence from the colourful Bondi Beach, her women’s swimwear, particularly the crochet ‘monokini’, is popular throughout the globe with the likes of Rihanna, Kourtney Kardashian, Mel B, and Vanessa Hudgens all being spotted in her pieces. As of 2012, the brand’s collections were available worldwide being stocked throughout Europe, Asia, the USA, Australia and New Zealand, as well as on online giants ASOS, Shopbop, My Catwalk and Net-A-Porter.
Recently* we were lucky enough to have a chat with founder and chief designer Lisa Maree to find out all there is to know about her namesake brand.

Where did it all begin for Lisa Maree? How did the label come about?
I am a qualified Graphic Artist but I never actually worked in the field as modeling took up most of my time. However the Graphic Training is what lead me into fashion design, I first started printing my designs on t-shirts and everything blossomed from there.
We love the cute crochet of your Spring/Summer 2012-2013 collection, tell us about the signature Lisa Maree aesthetic.
The signature Lisa Maree style is most definitely the crochet bathing suits and cover-ups – Boho style with a modern twist. We have re-engineered the crochet yarn to hold its stretch whilst wet, making it both functional and aesthetically appealing.
What are the future hopes for Lisa Maree? What is the ultimate dream?
The ultimate dream is to keep moving forward in leaps and bounds. We would love for Lisa Maree to become a international recognizable brand.
Who are you favourite designers an what about them inspires you? Where else do you draw influence from?
I am inspired by everything around me. My home on Bondi Beach is the perfect place for ideas to come to me, I love taking my puppy people watching and we sit together and I sketch out anything that comes to mind. A simple style of a person’s clothes can give me an idea or even just staring out into the ocean can give birth to a new swimsuit.
If you could pick a person (famous or otherwise), object or concept that best represents Lisa Maree style, who or what would it be?
I would love to see Elle McPherson in Lisa Maree, I feel like she continually looks stylish whether she is casual chic, captured on the street or attending fashion galas. She encompasses the meaning of a True Australian Beauty.
When you think of Australian fashion, what comes to mind?
I was recently interviewed by Glam Magazine in Qatar in the Middle East who posed a similar question, noting that they saw Australian designers as having an edge and an extra cool quotient. I’d like to think that Australian fashion is outside the box, that we try to push our boundaries just a little further that the majority of the rest of the world.
