Kuwaii is a womenswear label founded by Australian designer, Kristy Barber in 2009, soon gaining a reputation for their wearable, uncomplicated and refined garments that remain beautiful without being overworked. The brand follows a strict design philosophy that is so relevant in these times of over consumption – they believe that a garment should be treasured, enjoyed a thousand times ever occupying a special place in the owners heart and wardrobe. Kristy believes strongly in the idea of sustainable fashion, in times where disposable fashion is commonplace and our landfills are becoming increasingly filled with discarded clothing.
Kristy continues with her reputation for simple timeless elegance with her Spring/Summer 2012-2013 collection, entitled ‘Landscape’. The seasonal offering from Kuwaii pays homage to the beauty of the Australian landscape – finding an photograph of the Queensland river system in a photography book from the 1970’s, Kristy had her inspiration. Working with local Graphic Designer Lauren Cassar the river system photograph was reworked to create an truly original abstract print that features throughout the fresh and contemporary collection.
The collection is Kuwaii through and through – it’s comfortable, fuss-free, yet still fun, with a hint of the adorable, featuring cute keyholes, double halternecks, mesh paneling and contrast piping, in a subtle take on the sports luxe trend. The colour palette is pure summer with pops of poppy red, sky blue and mustard yellow that sit seamlessly alongside crisp white, soft stone and classic black.
Stand out pieces of the seasonal line include the stone coloured Oasis Trench Dress, with it’s cascading lapels and uneven hem; the super chic Lustre Dress that is endlessly versatile and the Darby Platforms that have been reincarnated in sandal form the suit the hot summer. All of the brand’s pieces are produced ethically in Australia, with a strong commitment to excellent quality, while supporting local industries Fabrics are carefully selected to be environmentally friendly and sustainable, with modal, cupro, tencel and lyocell featuring strongly in their collections.
