Kirrily Johnston Winter Clothing & Fashion 2010Winter Fashion – Womens & Unisex – Cave Dwellers by Kirrily Johnston
Words from Kirrily Johnston Kirrily Johnston’s Autumn Winter 2010 collection began with a desire to use rich earthy colours. An imaginary couple formed in her mind that lived underground, primitively in caves. The underground lovers had seen no other humans for years. Their hair was long and unruly. They had become at one with their surroundings, adapting to the elements. Wrapping and layering themselves to protect from the cold and the darkness. They lived amongst the clay, the rocks and the boulders, the moss & the thick dark undergrowth. The many years in isolation with only each other as mirrors has caused them to mirror each other. They have become like twins. Incorporating moss greens, ochre, stone grey’s and monochromatic black & white, the palette is somber and earthy. Luxurious fabrics including soft leather, fine jersey’s, fluffy angora’s, cashmere felt and pony skin are used to mimic the textures of nature and complement Johnston’s exquisite craftsmanship and attention to detail. Sequin detailing adds a touch of radiance and gives instant glamour to edgy evening wear. Whilst Johnston’s signature features; soft tailoring, multi function pieces and drawstrings are featured throughout, there is also emphasis on new silhouettes. Wrap dresses and skirts that emphasize the waist are paired with textured angora knits that tuck in giving a slightly 50’s feel. Johnston’s second unisex/menswear collection re-enforces the effortless androgynous appeal that her clothing has. Johnston, long since known for her signature style of incorporating layering and texture, creates a collection that can be worn by all. Sylvie Markovina’s jewellery range this season inhabits the undergrowth as much as the cave dweller’s themselves. Burnished metal tarantula cuffs and chokers are modern in form but appear to have been dug up from the earth. Layer upon layer of unisex gun metal chains and military like bullet belts add an element of “rock” to the collection. Accessories are all created from a combination of leather and pony skin. Beautiful tote bags that are practical enough for everyday use but also roomy enough to use as an overnight bag , pony skin ankle boots and belts and wallets are the perfect pieces to finish off the look. I always loved Kirrily Johnston’s womenswear, but i love her menswear. Oversized coats, draped and ombre knits – fantastic!
