Kelly Love creates boutique clothing collections for women
An Australian Fashion Review exclusive – Interview with Kelly Love
The Kelly Love fashion label as launched at Australian Fashion Week 2008 – New Generation Show with Beautiful Side of Everything – A collection of light and feminine styles, including feather weight dresses, velvety soft camisoles and French knickers. This collection was later stocked in high end boutiques throughout Australia.
Please introduce yourself Kelly and tell us about your background.
The idea of having my own clothing label began whilst living in Osaka Japan and working for a Japanese Fashion Designer. I then moved back to Sydney and studied at KVB Institute of Technology whilst doing work experience with Akira Isogawa, Fleur Wood and Charlie Brown. Following this I began working with the couture label Baccini and Hill where I developed a love for bespoke tailoring and luxurious fabrics.
How did the Kelly Love label begin?
Australian Fashion Week saw the launch of my label in association with New Generation Show with my first collection “Beautiful Side of Everything”. This was quickly snapped up by high end boutiques in Sydney, Canberra and Perth. The collection was also featured in various fashion magazines including Cosmopolitan and The Fashion Journal.
What can we expect from you in the coming collections?
Both of my collections have been very whimsical and I would like to go a bit cooler in my next collection. I am living in London at the moment and really love the “throw everything together” English way of dressing. Less is always more. I’d like to make it a little rougher around the edges with the odd trim thrown in for abit of glamour.
What do you hope to accomplish with your fashion label? What is the dream!?
I would like to stock in the shops that I love – Browns, Belinda, Liberty and David Jones to get great exposure but also the smaller boutiques that have a loyal customer base and really appreciate lovely clothes. It’s also always great to see your clothes in magazines so just to have people wearing my clothes and feeling beautiful in them would be fab!
Who are your favourite fashion designers and what about them inspires you? What else inspires you?
I love Alexander McQueen for the drama – there will never be anyone else like him. Alice McCall, Lover and Future Classics make clothes that make you feel really pretty and there are also loads of new up and coming designers that I love – Charlotte Taylor and Nicola DeMain do really unique clothes. Selected Femme has a great SS10 collection but my all time favourite is probably Chloe for everything – clothes, shoes and bags!! Other designers inspire me to be different with my own work!! My inspiration comes from anywhere! I love travelling and seeing new places, antique shops, furnishings and cushions, shoes, artwork anything! My AW2010 collection was inspired by romance and my time spent living in Japan.
If you could pick someone famous that best represents your labels style, who would it be? Alternatively, what famous person/s would you want wearing your label?
I would love Maggie Gyllenhaal or Alexa Chung to wear my clothes. Both women are the epitome of cool.
