Kate Williams is an Australian designer based in London

Australian Fashion Review managed to catch up with Kate for a quick session about her namesake fashion label.

How did you get into fashion design? Where did it all begin for your namesake label?

I was studying law at university when I realised that I wanted to do something much more creative with my career. I undertook an internship with the amazing girls, Margaret and Michelle, at MXM Couture in Brisbane to see if fashion design could be the right avenue for me. My time with them was so inspiring and motivating. They instilled me with such a passion for design and the craftsmanship of clothing, that I left Law and embarked upon my new direction! I had always dreamed of having my own label, and when my MA graduation collection received such a good response I thought that I should just bite the bullet!

What can we expect from the Kate Williams label in the coming years?

You can expect a balance of print and colour in the designs, along with the same woman-focused design philosophy that is so important to me now. In the near future I will be designing fabrics and pieces for homewares.

What do you hope to accomplish with your fashion label? What is the dream!?

I hope to be able to provide women with clothing that fits, feels comfortable and is cutting edge but remains completely wearable. If I can manage to do that, that would please me no end! My dream is to stay attuned to what women are demanding and desiring from their clothes so that I can nurture the label to a strong presence within the industry.

Who are your favourite fashion designers and what about them inspires you? What else inspires you?

Inspirations for my collections can come from a variety of sources; people I’ve met,  places I’ve seen, curious objects… Every season I’m constantly inspired by different designers and collection concepts, so my favourite designers tend to change from season to season. The two designers I feel I relate to the most in terms of approach to design would be Miuccia Prada and Donna Karan. They both use colour and fabric in innovative ways with a paramount importance placed on the woman wearing the clothes and their comfort.

If you could pick someone famous that best represents your labels style, who would it be? Alternatively, what famous person/s would you want wearing your label?

Any woman who stays true to her own personal style and puts her own twist on the clothes she’s wearing would be a dream to dress. I think that at the moment we’re spoilt for choice of strong, individual and successful famous women who know how to dress –  it’s so hard to just pick one! I HAVE admired Beyonce Knowles for her success, sense of self, class and of course beauty, for many years…so if I really HAD to pick just one, I would be so thrilled for it to be her!
