Contemporary Menswear from One of Australia’s Hottest New Design Talents
Interview with Jeromy Lim – January 2012
Jeromy Lim is one of Australia’s hottest young up-and-coming designers with his namesake menswear label. Recently we were lucky enough to get an exclusive interview with the man himself, to discuss the foundations of his brand, his inspirations and what the future holds.
Who behind the Jeromy Lim Fashion Label and what is your background? What does your label specialise in? “Jeromy Lim” is my Perth-based namesake Menswear Label - I have recently graduated from Curtin University with a BA in Fashion & Textiles, winning a top student award. Additionally, while studying I won numerous awards including the Carton Studio Prize from Perth Fashion Festival.
How did it all start for the Jeromy Lim label? When and where did you found your label?
Jeromy Lim was launched in September 2011 at the Perth Fashion Festival. I was given an opportunity to showcase my work there through the Carton Initiative, which offers a six month mentorship with an established designer and a free working studio space in Perth CBD.
What are the future plans for the Jeromy Lim label?
I am currently in Sydney interning for Akira Isogawa. I have also won a spot in Fashion Exposed Debut to showcase in Sydney in February 2012 where I will show and sell my Spring/Summer collection and hopefully expand my reach to the Eastern states. I am currently waiting to here back from LMFF (L’Oreal Melbourne Fashion Festival) about the National Graduate Showcase so if that goes well…then Melbourne in March 2012 as well.
Name some inspirations and fellow designers you draw influence from.
When I design, I design with a person/character in mind. I think about everything he or she has been through, and I come up with the clothes they would wear. I tell myself – THIS IS HOW THEY WOULD WEAR IT, AND THEY WOULD WANT TO WEAR IT! The Designer that greatly inspires me is the late Alexander Mcqueen (it’s such a stock standard answer), but I admire him for his conceptual drive and what he stood for as an Artist with a message.
Name the ideal celebrity that reflects the Jeromy Lim Aesthetic.
I have no idea – can cartoon characters be classed as celebrities? I watch a lot of cartoons – as mentioned above, I design clothes for characters. So I usually sketch these really random characters that I’d like to dress. So in terms of celebrities I’d choose George Clooney.
Where is the Jeromy Lim collection stocked?
Since being launched in September 2011 I have 2 stockists in Perth and hope to secure at a few in Sydney in February 2012 through the Fashion Exposed Debut event.
