An exclusive interview with footwear designer Gary Castles.
Please introduce yourself Gary and tell us about your background? The Sydney-sider Gary Castles famous for his shoes has dressed fashionistas for over a decade. I have been designing women’s shoes since the 70′s. Stunning shoes can instantly add style and bring your wardrobe to life. Gary Castles Sydney has 3 stores in Sydney- Double Bay, Woollahra and Strand Arcade and two Franchise stores. Brisbane in Fortitude Valley and in Adelaide s fashion shopping precinct King William Rd, Hyde Park. How did the Gary Castles label begin? I started working with my step father Raymond Castles and mother Elfy in the 1960s and Gary Castles Sydney developed from here. What can we expect from Gary Castles in the coming collections? Fabulous show stopping range of boots and shoes!!!
What do you hope to accomplish with your namesake label? What is the dream!? The dream has always been the same, to be the respected name in Australian retail footwear. That means a name that provides leadership and direction one that is exclusive in style and design. It presents quality craftsmanship at an affordable price with a unique store environment combining comfort with ‘edge’. Who are your favourite fashion designers and what about them inspires you? What else inspires you? My favourite designers emanate from days gone by: Charles Jourdan, Walter Steiger, Bruno Magli, Salvatore Ferragamo, Manolo Blanik…these were the originators/creators. My inspiration comes from all facets of everyday life, whether it be here in Australia or travelling, not so much from a design or particular designer. If you could pick someone famous that best represents your labels style, who would it be? Alternatively, what famous person/s would you want wearing your label? … A Carrie Bradshaw type..anyone that loves wearing very chic styles!
