Introduction to the Flux Fashion Label
Denis Leadbeater an Julian Johnson met on the punk gig circuit in the 1980’s, going on to form a firm friendship that would eventually lead to the foundation of their menswear fashion label, ‘Flux’ in 1999. Both Denis and Julian had a background in fashion design, so it seemed logical that the pair would start out with a small line of printed t-shirts.
The Flux fashion label has grown significantly since then, with their product line expanding to a full comprehensive menswear collection, including denim, t-shirts, knitwear, outwear, trousers and chinos, shirting, as well as a line of basics.
As of 2012, the brand’s collections were stocked in over 50 boutiques Australia-wide, including Victoria’s Fox Maiden, Lux Melbourne and Snake in the Grass; Queensland’s Lucid Laundry, Universal and Violet Green; and New South Wales’ Dirty Laundry, Local Derby and Tuchuzy. Additionally, the brand is picking up an increasing number of international stockists, which currently includes Thailand’s Pronto, Taiwan’s Infected, and New Zealand’s Superette.
Aesthetic of the Flux Brand
The Flux fashion label has become well known known for its vintage-style aesthetic, covering a range slim fit tees and their line of ‘fucking skinny jeans’. Each collection is constructed out of high quality fabrics, to create well cut, fitted pieces that will last well beyond a single season. Flux are strong supporters of the Australian fashion industry, with all the street wear label’s collections are designed, created and produced in Melbourne, ensuring the highest quality and fair, ethical conditions for their workers.
The Flux fashion label won’t be selling out any tine soon – they are one of the few Australian fashion labels to reject a large (and lucrative) order from a department store, to protect their image and aesthetic. So far its seems like this unusual strategy had paid of for the brand, as its popularity continues to increase across Australia and in international markets.
