ffiXXed is a collaborative art, fashion and design project by Australian artists/designers Kain Picken and Fiona Lau. Founded in Berlin in 2008, the primary focus of ffiXXed is the production of a bi-seasonal prêt-a-porter fashion label. They have worked together between studio spaces in Berlin, Hong Kong, New York and are currently based in Shenzhen, China where they have recently established an in-house production studio.
the ffiXXed label is globally available, and is already stocked in Berlin, Australia, NZ and the USA (check out the ffixxed website for stockists).
Australian Fashion Review caught up with Fiona and Kain for a quick session about ffiXXed.
Please introduce yourself Fiona and Kain and tell us about your background
Fiona studied Fashion Design at RMIT and Kain studied fine arts -painting at the VCA. Fiona interned with Wendy and Jim in Vienna and Bless in Berlin before starting ffiXXed. Kain has been involved in a number of exhibitions and continues to practice as a professional artist (with Uplands gallery in Melbourne) outside of ffiXXed activities. We also participate in art and design activities together as ffiXXed.
How did ffiXXed begin?
We were based in Berlin for about a year, Kain was working with a gallery there and Fiona was interning at Bless. After Fiona completed her internship at Bless, we began working together creating clothes and things for for ourselves. We took up a studio and the project just sort of developed from there. Our first formal collaboration as ffiXXed was a series of flags that we exhibition at Art Rotterdam in 2008. ffiXXed was, and still is a response to our own changing personal and creative circumstances.
What can we expect from ffiXXed in the coming collections?
More of everything! Prints, knits, shoes, iphone accessories, homewares, healthy eating and more!
What do you hope to accomplish with your art and design? What is the dream!?
We want to produce ideas and products that can address, transcend and stimulate a variety of social and domestic situations.
Who are your favourite fashion designers and what about them inspires you? What else inspires you?
Our favorite fashion designers are amazing individuals who posses an intense personal vision about the function of design in daily life.
If you could pick someone famous that best represents your labels style, who would it be? Alternatively, what famous person/s would you want wearing your label?
Jeremy Irons! But we think it would be hot if we could get Little Wayne wearing some ffiXXed clothing.
