Former truck driver Daniel Avakian is a Australian fashion designer and namesake menswear and womenswear label founded in 2007, following already extensive success within the fashion industry. Daniel graduated from the Whitehouse Institute of Design in 2003, being award a scholarship to undertake a masters programme at the prestigious Accademia Italiana Arte Moda in Italy’s Florence. It was here that he honed his skills in fine tailoring and couture, graduating with a 1st class honours in 2005.
Following his time in Italy, Daniel Avakian relocated to East London, where he worked as a freelance designer and pattern cutter for many high profile British designers including Giles Deacon, Alice Temperley and Jonathan Saunders, amongst others. After a successful year in London, Daniel moved back to Australia to work with renowned Australian designer Alex Perry before deciding in 2007 that the time was right to go it alone and he launched his namesake label Daniel Avakian. He showed his debut collection at Rosemount Australian Fashion Week that same year and the rest, as they say, is history.
Unfortunately, we have struggled to find much information on the Daniel Avakian brand following 2009, apart from the news in April of 2011 that Daniel had created an exclusive womenswear range for Liz Jordan. When the official website is back online, we promise to bring you all the updated news we can.
Back in November of 2009, Australian Fashion Review Blog was lucky enough to have a chat to Daniel Avakian to find out all there is to know about his self-titled brand.
Who is behind the label? What is your background?
DANIEL AVAKIAN (MA fashion and Textiles) – Namesake fashion label. I am Australian born with an Armenian descent.
When and where did it all begin for the Daniel Avakian brand?
The label began on paper in September 2007, and the debut aesthetic/styling of the labels designs took shape in form of a ready to-wear collection in October of the same year.
What direction is the Daniel Avakian fashion label taking?
In 2009, the DANIEL AVAKIAN label has switched focus from ready-to-wear clothing collections to specialise in the design/development and manufacture of both men’s and women’s tailored garments.
The products include: Male/Female Bespoke suiting and Women’s special event dresses. At the moment, my bespoke services are spread by word-of-mouth and/or by referral.
What do you hope to accomplish with your brand? What is the ultimate dream!?
The dream is to continually evolve, develop our “tailored signature with an edge” to a wider audience as it is currently available via the bespoke service offered.
Furthermore,to continue and design a strong aesthetic which will be easily identifiable as a DANIEL AVAKIAN piece to customers in years to come. Designs with an attention to detail/quality and trend relevance are also included in “the dream”.
If you could pick someone famous that best represents the Daniel Avakian style, who would it be? Alternatively, what famous person/s would you want wearing your label?
I am very grateful of the “famous people” that have already worn the label I offer, and I hope to continue to see them and others in it in the future. However it is currently equally as important to me that the “everyday people” whom place orders with the label are as happy with the products developed for them. I feel there satisfaction not only puts a smile on my face but often results in recommendations to others.
Who are your favourite fashion designers and what about them inspires you? What else inspires you?
My personal inspiration comes from my life experiences, education, music and film which are translated into design from the skills I have learnt whilst studying and working within the fashion industry. The designers I have always favoured superiorly created garments that were”new and relevant” that there following always appreciated.
Complete the following sentence: The Daniel Avakian fashion label is unique because…
