Australian Fashion Review was intrigued and impressed when contacted by Cylk to tell us about their Australian fashion label. Cylk claims to be Australia’s only eco-chic seamless label, combining natural organic fabrics such as bamboo and silks to create seamless luxury womens clothing.
Stocked in New York, Japan, Milan and Stockholm, Cylk has already established itself as an international fashion player. We were more than happy to catch up with Cylk for another exclusive inter’NET’view.
Q1) Who are the name/s behind the label? What is/are your backgrounds?
CEO Michel Abeysekera is an ex-corporate banker, who made the transition into the fashion world 14 years ago to launch Australia’s finest seamless innovation company. As member of the Australian Fashion Council, Michel has been a key player in the supply and distribution for some of Australia’s biggest retailers.
Keshia Abeysekera – Brand Manager
Keshia’s developed a passion and enthusiasm for the fashion industry, both working with customers in sales and marketing, working in front of the camera, and also through being involved in the planning and organisation behind the scenes of Fashion Week and VIP events. After majoring in Media and Communications at the University of Melbourne with a strong focus towards Journalism, Media Law and Marketing, Keshia went on to work in Marketing and Promotions with The Mushroom Group and Frontier Touring Company before deciding that fashion was where she wanted to be. She was appointed Brand Manager for cylk in 2008, where she was solely responsible for managing the fashion label from design through to production, as well as coordinating the brand promotion and marketing initiatives. Keshia’s career highlight to date has been showcasing cylk to an international audience including prominent buyers, stylists and key media personnel in New York in 2010.
Emily Nasr – Product Developer
At 12 years old, Emily decided she wanted to study fashion design at RMIT. On completion of her course majoring in Applied Design in womenswear in 2006, she travelled to the UK where she worked with Betty Jackson and Paul & Joe. Here she quickly discovered the face-paced nature of fashion industry, being involved in London Fashion Week with Betty Jackson. Having returned to Australia and landing the job as Product Developer for cylk where she has been for over two years. Emily believes her experience abroad was instrumental to her career and looks forward to showcasing her cylk designs to and international audience.
Q2) When and where did the label all begin?
Cylk began in the Summer of 2006 with a small capsule collection of 100% silk garments. After picking up a number of high profile accounts globally including Henri Bendels New York, Fred Segal and Gio Moretti Milan, cylk expanded into a full collection of contemporary basics, essentials and skillfully designed ready-to-wear pieces in an array of luxurious blends including bamboo, silk and modal. Cylk continue to be an innovator within the industry, constantly pushing the boundaries of seamless technology and yarn development.
Q3) What do you hope to accomplish with your fashion label? What is the dream!?
Cylk’s dream is to have retail stores opening up both locally and overseas! While they would love to see their pieces on celebrities, they ultimately want women all over the world to look to cylk as the place to go for all of their essential pieces, in beautiful luxurious blends and to develop a loyal brand following on a global scale.
Q4) If you could pick someone famous that best represents your labels style, who would it be? Alternatively, what famous person would you want wearing your label?
Diane Kruger’s effortlessly-chic sense of style epitomizes the cylk label…She has a casual elegance that transcends through from day to night. Other favourites include Alexa Chung and Chloe Sevigny for their individuality and confidence, Sienna Miller for her vivacity and Maggie Gyllenhaal for her mature sense of style.
Q5) Who are your favourite fashion designers and what inspires you?
Cylk is quite unique, but their inspiration is drawn from a number of places. Alexander Wang, Isabel Marant, Proenza Schouler, Phillip Lim and Rick Owens are some of cylk’s favourites. Cylk also draws inspiration beyond what is happening on the international catwalks, whether it’s movies, history or architecture, and adapts what they see in new and exciting ways that push the limits of current trends and manufacturing techniques.
