A boutique Australian designer label for women
Australian designer Colin Heaney caught up with Australian Fashion Review to talk about his namesake designer label. The Colin Heaney label specializes in boutique womens fashion, particularly using fine silks and delicate fabrics in the creation of sarongs, kaftans, swimwear, scarves and headbands.
Please introduce yourself Colin and tell us about your background
I grew up in Canada and the US, in 1967 I came to Australia on a surf journey and have been here ever since. I have had no formal training. When I was 18 a friend taught me sandal making, then I worked in wood, metal, fibres, candles, surfboards and in 1982 started glassblowing which I continued to do for 22 years. I started creating images using Photoshop 4 years ago and started doing kaftans about 2 years ago.
How did the Colin Heaney label begin?
About 4 years ago I started playing with Photoshop, with photos of my house Casa Blu I created a myriad of graphics. Eventually I had so many images that I wanted to do something with them and after printing on canvas decided that I would start printing on silk scarves, this led to kaftans and swimwear.
What can we expect from Colin Heaney in the coming collections?
The kaftans will remain a consistent piece in the collection as it is such a perfect canvas for my designs and I also just so love the flowing feminine quality they have. I am working on a new collection, which includes silk skirts, elegant tops and silk pants. I always want to create pieces that I hope are uplifting and beautiful.
What do you hope to accomplish with your fashion label? What is the dream!?
My dream is to always follow my creativity and welcome change. As long as I am growing and creating having fun I am satisfied but I never know where that will lead but I would like to do a full range of clothing and eventually homewares.
Who are your favourite fashion designers and what about them inspires you? What else inspires you?
I love designers that do flow and softness. I love colour, drape and simplicity.
If you could pick someone famous that best represents your labels style, who would it be? Alternatively, what famous person/s would you want wearing your label?
That would be Cate Blanchet – And any woman who is strong in her feminine nature .
