Book Club FashionBook Club Mens Boutique Clothing Label
Another Australian Fashion Review exclusive interview with the two fashion designer founders of menswear label Book Club. Q1) Who are the name/s behind the label? What is/are your backgrounds? There are just two of us, Simon Gibson (aged 22 as at 2009) and Serge Bodulovic (aged 24 as at 2009) We met at university as we were both studying arts/commerce and discovered a shared interest in fashion. We also ran individual local t-shirt labels. After Serge finished university, he spent time in Milan completing short fashion courses. Simon has just graduated. Q2) When and where did the label all begin? The label started in our hometown, Canberra just under a year ago [late 2008]. There is not a huge fashion scene obviously but there is a close knit creative community of designers, artists and musicians who are all very supportive of one another. Q3) What do you hope to accomplish with your fashion label? What is the To always enjoy work and to work with interesting creative people in the future. Q4) If you could pick someone famous that best represents your labels The love-children of Alber Elbaz and Lupe Fiasco, the Beastie Boys and Hedi Slimane, Morrissey and Le Corbusier. Q5) Who are your favourite fashion designers and what about them inspires Some of our favourite designers and labels include Hedi Slimane, Orjan Andersson (Cheap Monday), Raf Simons, Henrik Vibskov, Fifth Avenue Shoe Repair (Lee Cotter & Astrid Olsson) and surface2air. While these designers/labels are a little bit different from each other, we are inspired by their aesthetics and direction. We also draw inspiration from the usual sources, art, design, architecture and music. Ultimately, we think lines between these areas are easily blurred, we work closely with artists, various designers, architects and musicians and we find inspiration in the people around us. Q6) Complete the following sentence: Our fashion label is unique because Because we are from Canberra, we haven’t been part of a greater scene and have been able to forge a style that is a blend of aesthetics, separate from Australian trends.
