Introduction to the Bec & Bridge Fashion Label

Dynamic duo Becky Cooper and Bridget Yorston met while they were both studying for a Bachelor of Design at Sydney’s University of Technology. Paired together for their very first assignment, the twosome were soon to form a firm friendship, living and breathing fashion together. In 2003, while in their second year of university, they decided to enter the fashion world for themselves and launched their label ‘Bec & Bridge’.

The Design Duo behind Bec & Bridge – Becky Cooper and Bridget Yorston

At first the label was just something the pair did on the side while studying, with university commitments taking preference. It turned out to be a great way to start their brand – because they didn’t have a lot invested, they allowed themselves to make mistakes and learn on the job. Additionally, working together on university assignments proved to be the perfect stepping stone for working together on a fashion label by learning each other’s strengths and weaknesses.

The Bec & Bridge label had a similar start Sass & Bide, taking existing jeans and reworking them into something new and fresh, starting with a single pair of jeans a friend wanted updated for a party – they dyed and hand painted the jeans, including signing their names and. The jeans turned out to be extremely popular and the duo were soon reworking jeans for all of their guy friends, charging $100 a pair. They soon had lots of interest in their revamped jeans and made the step to fully fledged fashion label when they received a call from a buyer who had read their mobile number from a pair of their jeans and wanted to order 200 pairs.

Things moved quickly for the label after that and by 2005 the Bec & Bridge label had firmly secured a unique place within the Australian womenswear market, with a growing number of boutiques picking up the brand’s collections. Just one year later, in 2006, Australian department store David Jones offered the design duos label a place in their prestigious brand profile, and the rest, as they say, is history.

After opening the 2011 Australian Fashion Week with their Spring/Summer collection, entitled ‘Violet Haze’, Bec & Bridge saw their popularity in the international market sky rocket, fuelling expansion into the European and Asian markets. As of 2011/2012, Bec & Bridge had an impressive domestic profile with stockist throughout Australia including, Sydney’s Code Orange, Balmain’s Lol & Roc, Brisbane’s Little Lace, Melbourne’s Green With Envy, Doncaster’s Luella, Perth’s Billie & Rose and Darwin’s Pink Hill, as well as David Jones’s department stores throughout the country.

The brand’s international profile is just as impressive as their domestic one with stockists including, Auckland’s Superette, Los Angeles’s Curve, New York’s Damsel in Distress, Oklahoma’s Rope, Nagoya’s Fashion Core Midwest, Dubai’s Harvey Nichols, Singapore’s Antipodean and St Barthelemy’s L. Roy. The brand is also stocked through many prestigious online boutiques including, The Grand Social, Frock Shop, My Catwalk and Revolve Clothing. Bec & Bridge Fashion Label: Key Dates

  • 2003: Designer duo Becky Cooper and Bridget Yorston launch their fashion label Bec & Bridge, while in their second year of a design degree at Sydney’s University of Technology.
  • 2006: Australian department store, David Jones picked up the Bec & Bridge label, stocking their collections alongside other prestigious homeland designers.
  •  2010: Bec & Bridge expands into the overseas market with collections being stocked in many prestigious boutiques throughout America. Also this year, Bec & Bridge are honoured with DHL Express Fashion Export Scholarship in recognition of their international expansion – the prize includes freight and logistics to the value of $10,000.
  •   2011: It is a big moment for the Bec & Bridge fashion label, when they opened Australian Fashion Week with their Spring/Summer collection ‘Violet Haze’.

The brand’s look is the epitome of young, contemporary and chic – coupled with the pair’s meticulous eye for detail, Bec & Bridge is truly set apart from their peers. It is their unique design aesthetic that has won the brand a number of celebrity fans, including Australian icons Jennifer Hawkins and Miranda Kerr.
