Andrew McDonald is an Australian designer and namesake men’s and women’s footwear label founded in 1992. With humble beginnings in a small workshop in Sydney’s Surry Hills, Andrew was soon noticed for his skill and artistry in creating hand-crafted bespoke shoes. This led to Andrew being awarded a Churchill Fellowship in 1996, understudy the master shoemakers, John Lobb of London and Paul Harden shoemakers.
On his return to Sydney, Andrew utilised his newly honed skills to open his current shop and workshop in Sydney’s Paddington. Andrew is a true craftsman, enjoying commissions for both fashion and film, his design team also comprises of a number of dedicated and like-minded shoemakers, who are at the forefront of footwear and accessory design.
As of 2012, as well as the standalone store in Paddington, the Andrew McDonald collections are available in selected boutiques worldwide including, Melbourne’s Beggar Man Thief, Brisbane’s Fallow, Auckland’s Vicki Taylor, San Francisco’s Downtown Woman, Tokyo’s Lift Etage, Moscow’s Project 3 and Paris’s Showroom Romeo.
Back in March in 2011 the man behind the brand Andrew McDonald kindly took five minutes out of his hectic schedule to answer some quick fire questions about his eponymous footwear label. A big thanks to the girls at Agent 25 for getting in contact and organising it all.
How did you get into bespoke shoe design? Where did it all begin for Andrew McDonald?
I met the shoemaker Paul Harnden when i was living in London and his business model became an initial inspiration to start my business.
What can we expect from the label in the coming collections?
More accessories and more experimentation with leather treatments techniques.
What do you hope to accomplish with Andrew McDonald? What is the ultimate dream!?
To spend all my working hours designing and testing.
Who are your favourite fashion designers and what about them inspires you? What else inspires you?
Joe Banana’s – he has a store in the QVB building in Sydney. I love the fact that he can sell you a banana yellow suit jacket and a leopard print shirt off the rack.
