Akira Furniture – Dress Code – 2009
Akira Furniture – Dress Code I have once again been reminded why Akira Isogawa is one of Australia’s most celebrated artists. Not only has he an exceptional talent to create unique clothing pieces, Akira has the ability to express himself with contemporary designs of art. I recently stumbled upon ‘Dress Code’ a collaboration between Akira Isogawa, and Fukutoshi Ueno, one of Brisbane’s emerging designers who bring elements of Japanese culture to contemporary Australian work. Both designers have Japanese heritage yet have spent a significant proportion of their lives within Australia. (Akira on the left, Fukutoshi on the right) ‘Dress Code’ basically implants Akira’s kimono inspired designs on Fukutoshi’s acclaimed furniture pieces named CODE. The result – DRESS CODE. The CODE pieces are constructed from rosewood, silver ash or Tasmanian oak. Brisbane furniture maker Tony Mann applies the expert craftsmanship needed to create these truly remarkable furniture/artistic pieces. When I first saw the pieces, I was instantly amazed at the intricacy of detail, yet simplicity and quality of design. It for this reason I have included Akira’s artistic flair of furniture on Fashion Review Australia. Akira best sums it up by saying “When I first came to Sydney in 1986, I remember looking at kimono fabric and realised how different it appeared under the bright intensity of the Australian sun. I began to see the kimono as a modern idea, not just something buried in tradition, this inspired me to use the kimono tradition in a collection of women’s fashion designs. I hope my translation of a traditional textile into this different for and medium – the DRESS CODE collection, will express the same sense of timelessness, luxuriousness and modernity in space. I hope it will stir the emotions and inspire people to great heights.”
