A Great Australian Romance
By Marianna Tigani Some say Italians make the best lovers and Paris is the place for a romantic rendezvous. Australia? Well, we don’t often get a mention in the romantic stakes. Somehow our cultural landscape of beer, vegemite and another-shrimp-on-the-barbie doesn’t exactly incite the romantic juices to bubble over. Yet thanks to one Australian couple we can know boast we are home to one of the world’s leading ‘romances.’ Anna Plunkett and Luke Sales are that couple (in business only). Their label, Romance Was Born, has delivered a maverick brand of style to what can sometimes be a barren Australian fashion landscape. They have taken all of the things we may cringe about but secretly love (our Nannas, Australian iconography, multiculturalism) and somehow cut and stitched them into the most exciting collections to grace our runways these past few seasons. Their ensembles genuinely sweep you off your feet with a mass of crochet, beading, tassles, pom-poms and ruffles adorning clashing prints and textures. Craftwork is interplayed with couture styling in a true case of opposites attract. While Australia has many wonderful designers, we have few who present an Australian fashion aesthetic reflecting a better version of who we are back to us. Let’s face it, no respecting young fashionista wants to be associated with surfwear or cork hats. Anna and Luke’s designs provoke a sense of pride, a love for country and the particularities of our culture… and that is what makes this label romantic. This is love Australian style – youthful, bright, fun and always quirky. The best part of this romance? It is home grown with all of their garments manufactured in the country. After completely winning over crowds and critics at Australian Fashion, the RWB Summer 2009/10 Collection is now available. I say we all take this label into our hearts and follow their lead: save some of your pennies now and invest in a true Australian icon.
